'I just really didn't know how much is possible in the musical spectrum until I met Timbaland,' singer says of their collaboration.

<P>After working with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/timbaland/artist.jhtml">Timbaland</a>Timbaland on his forthcoming album, <i>Scream,</i> <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/cornell_chris/artist.jhtml">Chris Cornell</a>Chris Cornell has realized something about himself: He doesn't need a band behind him to create great songs.</P><P>That's why the former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/soundgarden/artist.jhtml">Soundgarden</a>Soundgarden and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/audioslave/artist.jhtml">Audioslave</a>Audioslave frontman has made the decision to continue working solo for the foreseeable future.</P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"> <embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:315595" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D315595" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>According to Cornell, <a href="/news/articles/1591482/chris-cornell-unveils-timbaland-produced-tracks.jhtml">working with the producer du jour</a> has been an eye-opening experience in more ways than one. "There's this concept that, as a songwriter and a singer, I can't do it without a band," he explained. "This Timbaland/ Chris Cornell album is a perfect example of why I want to be solo. [I've learned that] there's so much, musically, that I haven't done. I've barely scratched the surface, and I have a lot of catching up to do. I feel like I want to fast-forward into my future of musical expression, because there are just so many different things I haven't done yet."</P><P>Cornell recorded <i>Scream</i>'s 13 tracks with Timbaland over a six-week period, working only at night. He said they would hit the studio at 1 a.m. and record until sunrise. It was all very new to Cornell, who praised Tim's production on the disc.</P><P>"Timbaland's diversity — in terms of his feels, the ideas he brought in, the beats, the rhythms, the musical themes and auras of the different songs — was incredible," he said. "His focus was very much, 'I don't repeat myself, and I won't let you repeat yourself.' Being someone that writes songs mainly from an organic platform, I just really didn't know how much is possible in the musical spectrum until I met Timbaland. What he brought in, every day, was a surprise. He would surprise me with ideas he would bring in or ideas he was working on every time. Timbaland's music, coming from someone like me who started in rock music, I view it as being psychedelic music more than hip-hop, more than pop, more than beat-based music. It's atmospheric, like <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/pink_floyd/artist.jhtml">Pink Floyd</a>Pink Floyd is atmospheric — he creates a sonic world that you get lost in, and you listen to it and you start to trip out."</P><P>While there is still no official release date for <i>Scream,</i> Cornell has been getting ready to tour in support of the disc. He plans to play the whole thing live, from front to back, in one continuous hour of beat-driven rock, because to him, the album is one big song.</P><P>"I've been rehearsing this as a musical piece that's an hour long," he said. "I've been rehearsing it with an entire band, and it's kind of taken on a new life. Something happens to a song when you play it live — it sort of transforms over time. And to have a whole album with these different musical interludes and these different mood changes in between the songs ... to perform that whole thing live, it's kind of transformed into this living, breathing animal, which isn't something I expected. It's challenging, but it's really fresh."</P><P>Cornell has also shot a video for the album's title track, with director Alan Ferguson (<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/fall_out_boy/artist.jhtml">Fall Out Boy</a>Fall Out Boy, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/gym_class_heroes/artist.jhtml">Gym Class Heroes </a>Gym Class Heroes). Filmed in Orange, California, last month, the clip reflects the feel of the album, he said.</P><P>"The idea Alan had for the video, which is pretty ingenious, is sort of capturing the two moods of the music," he said. "There's kind of two things going on. It's a record that's 111 beats per minute, which is fast. But the music and lyrics and the vocals are actually kind of slow and relaxed and flowing over this beat that's pretty uptempo and kind of chaotic and excited. The way Alan's shot the video, he's shooting both at the same time. My role in the video is performing the song in super-slow-motion, where I'm existing in this Zen-like world, singing these song lyrics and everything going on around me is super-fast, super-chaotic, and I'm just suspended in it. It's a filmic piece that has something to say about the song lyrics and the feel of the music. It's going to be very much a cinematic video."</p>

'I've listened to their music since I was a child,' says the R&B diva, who recorded 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love.'

<P>You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.</P><P>In early February, reports began circulating that <a href="/news/articles/1631297/mary-j-blige-records-led-zeppelins-stairway-heaven.jhtml">Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven,"</a> working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her <i>Stronger With Each Tear</i> album, due Monday.</P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float:left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:491065" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D491065" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering <i>another</i> Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the <i>Essence</i> Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.</P><P>"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."</P><P>Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.</P><P>"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

And though her hubby (of 13 years) Grant Hill is in London today with First Lady Michelle Obama as an Olympic delegate, the couple will be honored at Russell Simmons' Rush Philanthropic "Art for Life" Gala in the Hamptons along with Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon tomorrow.
The fab chick was styled by Samantha Telfair for her performance where she wore a sheer leopard blouse by BB Dakota, pants by Tibi, and a black Hermes cuff.

"American Idol" judge Mariah Carey (shown above in her official "Idol" promo pic) just signed on for Lee Daniels' The Butler which has begun shooting in New Orleans. Former "ANTM" star and actress Yaya DaCosta was also added to the cast.
The film is based on the true-life story of Eugene Allen, who worked as a butler in the White House from 1952 to 1986, serving under eight presidents.
Mariah and Yaya will join other YBFers like Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey and Jesse Williams who've already begun shooting. And music for the film will be composed by the legendary Quincy Jones. This may be good...
And on tv.....
Season three winner Emmitt Smith will return to "DWTS" this season (Sept. 24th) for its "All-Star" edition. The NFL legend will be back on the floor dancing it up yest again. Unfortunately, he's the only YBFer returning... so far. There's still a chance Kyle Massey will get voted back on as well.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> has been declared, "Hot, Ready, Legal" — and not just anywhere, but on the cover of <i>Rolling Stone.</i></P><P>And in the accompanying interview with the magazine, the singer, now 18, admits he's feeling a bit older since becoming legal.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Proving His Haters Wrong With 'Good Music'" id="vid:793035.id:1687833" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"I feel like I carry myself in a more manly way," he explained in the <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/on-the-cover-justin-bieber-becomes-a-man-20120718#ixzz20zFCJaGC" target="_blank">issue</a>, which hits newsstands on Friday. "I don't carry myself as a boy."</P><P>In addition to feeling older, <a href="/news/articles/1687569/justin-bieber-live-evolution.jhtml">his manager, Scooter Braun</a>, makes no apologies for Bieber having a personal life and not hiding it from his fans. He admits he's not too worried about Bieber losing fans thanks to his very public relationship with Selena Gomez.</P><P>"Personally, I think that's all a bunch of bulls---," Braun said. "Yes, there's gonna be some girls that if they see him with a girlfriend, it kills the dream — but there's also gonna be girls that see him with a girlfriend, hear about the romantic things he does and want him even more."</P><P>Bieber <a href="/news/articles/1689820/justin-bieber-reveals-rolling-stone-cover.jhtml">tweeted</a> out a photo of his cover on Tuesday. This is his second <i>Rolling Stone</i> cover, having previously graced the <a href="/news/articles/1658289/justin-bieber-abortion-rolling-stone.jhtml">cover in February 2011</a>. That appearance was met with controversy after Bieber was misquoted as saying he doesn't "believe in abortion." (The magazine later issued a statement clarifying Bieber's comments.)</P><P>If fans are feeling some déjà vu looking at Bieber's latest cover, it might be because the magazine used a <a href="http://gawker.com/5926723" target="_blank">similar tagline</a> when Lindsay Lohan appeared on <i>Rolling Stone</i> in 2004, when she, then 18, was featured in the magazine's annual Hot List issue.</P><P>Bieber's timing on the cover of the magazine lines up with several big events for the singer. Band will kick off Mylo Xyloto tour on April 17.

<P>They've teased us all year with spot festival dates, but beginning April 17 <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/coldplay/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Coldplay</a> will launch their first proper North American tour in three years when they hit the stage in Edmonton, Alberta to promote their latest, <I>Mylo Xyloto</I>.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="MTV News Extended Play: Coldplay" id="id:1670995" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>With three Grammy nominations under their belt -- two for "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" and one for "Paradise" -- the band will be on the road from April through August in the U.S. and Canada, currently slated to wrap things up at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on August 11.</P><P>Before they pack up their road cases, they will drop the third single from the album, "Charlie Brown," which goes to radio later this month. They will also appear on the first-ever 90-minute episode of the world's longest-running live music TV series, <a href="/news/articles/1670853/coldplay-austin-city-limits-up-in-flames.jhtml">"Austin City Limits"</a>.
 They'll ring in the new year on the program, which will air on PBS station nationwide on December 31 beginning at 11 p.m. "Coldplay New Year's Eve: An Austin City Limits Special" can also be viewed on demand on www.pbs.org starting at 11 p.m. ET that evening.</P><P>If you didn't get a chance to catch any of Coldplay's festival appearances earlier this year, singer Chris Martin promises that the new <I>Xyloto</I> songs will fit in with their soaring catalog, but might also feel a bit ... different. "It's definitely a schizophrenic album ... it keeps changing sounds," he told MTV News. "That's why we called it such a strange thing, <I>Mylo Xyloto</I>. Because we felt like so many people have already made up their minds about us, both good and bad, that we can sort of start again from scratch and try and reflect all the music we listen to and we love."</P><P>And while you may not see album guest <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Rihanna</a> hop up on stage with the band during the outing to sing <a href="/news/articles/1671007/coldplay-rihanna-mylo-xyloto.jhtml">"Princess of China"</a>

While promoting her upcoming debut for Roc Nation, Ora, British singer Rita Ora dished to COMPLEX Mag on her alleged feud with Rihanna, her career goals and what she plans to do in the industry.
With a photoshoot captured by photographer Zoe McConnell in London, Rita talked about "knowing herself" musically. And of course, there are the Rihanna comparisions.
“Ty-Ty” Smith, a partner in Roc Nation who worked with Rihanna from the time she signed with Def Jam, discussed the comparisons saying,
“When Rihanna came out we heard the Beyoncé comparisons. People jump to that when it’s someone they don’t know. Like, ‘Oh, that’s that girl who wants to be Beyoncé.’ Now they’re saying the same thing about Rita, that she’s the new Rihanna. She just has to show them who she is and she will be fine. I admire Rihanna. She works her ass off. She hasn’t had a break and she has given people hit after hit after hit. That work ethic and discipline is hardcore. That’s the kind of shit that I want to do. That I will do.”
For her part, Rita added, “Everyone thought that we hated each other, but the whole thing was created by the media. That’s what’s so funny."

<P>It should come as no surprise to anyone who saw one of their multiple massive tours that classic rockers the <a href="/music/artist/rolling_stones/artist.jhtml">Rolling Stones</a> topped <a href="http://www.billboard.com/#/features/top-touring-artists-of-the-decade-1004053065.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> magazine's list of Top Touring Artists of the 2000s. What's shocking, though, is that the Mick Jagger and company are just one of three acts that raked in more than $800 million from 2000-2009.</P><P>Unstoppable touring juggernauts the Stones took the #1 slot with more than $869 million in grosses for 264 shows that played to more than 8.2 million fans over the past decade, followed closely behind by <a href="/music/artist/u2/artist.jhtml">U2</a>, who banked $844 million from more than 9.8 million fans for 288 shows, all of which were sold-out. The latter is an honor none of the other acts on the list can boast of.</P><P><a href="/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a>, the top-grossing female artist, rounded out the $800 million club with grosses of more than $801 million for 248 shows (244 sold-out) that played to 6.3 million fans.</P><P>The top five was filled out by road hog Bruce Springsteen ($688 million, 403 shows with 248 sell-outs in front of 8.6 million fans) and Elton John ($604 million, 541 shows with 470 sell-outs in front of 5.8 million fans).</P><P>Among the other notables on the list: #6 Celine Dion ($537 million for 792 shows that played to 4.1 million) and the Dave Matthews Band, which had the highest audience figures on the list, with 11.2 million attending 547 shows (282 sell-outs) for a #7 ranking and a $505 million gross.</P><P>Country superstar Kenny Chesney was at #8 ($478 million, 622 shows, 9.2 million fans), followed by Bon Jovi (#9, $419 million, 249 shows, 5.4 million fans) and piano man Billy Joel (#10, $418 million, 241 shows, 4.1 million fans).</P><P>Reunited '80s act the Police were at #11 ($362 million, 144 shows, 3.3 million fans), just ahead of the perennially touring Eagles ($348 million, 240 shows, 3.1 million fans). Troubled rockers Aerosmith were not far behind (#14, $292 million, 320 shows with only 61 sell-outs to 4.6 million), and Metallica came in at #19 ($228 million, 187 shows, 3.6 million fans).</P><P>The only (relatively) contemporary act to crack the top 25 was Britney Spears, who landed at #21 with $216 million in grosses on 255 shows that drew 3.7 million fans.</p>
