Black Keys Drummer Says Nickelback Are 'Crap'
Patrick Carney blames the band for ruining rock and roll in interview with Rolling Stone.

<P>Having already spent a portion of 2011 <a href="/news/articles/1665300/lady-gaga-black-keys.jhtml">taking Twitter shots at Lady Gaga,</a> <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_keys/artist.jhtml">Black Keys</a> drummer Patrick Carney is kicking off 2012 with another feud ... only this time, he's setting his sights on Nickleback.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="The Black Keys 'Scrapped' The Original 'Lonely Boys' Video" id="vid:718827" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>In the new issue of <a href=http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/cover-story-excerpt-the-black-keys-20120104" target="_blank"><i>Rolling Stone,</i></a> Carney laments the current state of rock music (which, admittedly, is rather dire) and places the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Canadian quartet, whom he believes have ruined the genre with their "watered-down, post-grunge crap."</P><P>"Rock and roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world," he says. "So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be sh--. Therefore, you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world. F--- that! Rock and roll is the music I feel the most passionate about, and I don't like to see it f---ing ruined and spoon-fed down our throats [with] this ... horrendous sh--. When people start lumping us into that kind of sh--, it's like 'F--- you,' honestly."</P><P>Maybe he hasn't heard <a href="/news/articles/1673594/nickelback-bottoms-up-here-and-now.jhtml">"Bottoms Up."</a> Of course, in the interview, Carney was equally harsh on himself, saying he "suck[s] at the drums" and admitting that he agrees with most folks who call him awkward. But the most savage of his criticisms are definitely directed toward Nickelback. (A spokesperson for the band did not respond to MTV News' request for comment.) We may be witnessing the birth of our first great rock feud. Solange Gets Sisterly Birthday Love From Beyonce!
Celebrating your birthday in London with your famous big sis and brother-in-law and more aint too shabby. Solange Knowles posted a few super cute pics of her time at BBC Radio 1's Hackney weekend. And her sis Beyonce showered her with birthday love...
Solange posted the pic above of her and Bey playing around at the Hackney Marshes saying, "We.Are.Family...." She turned 26 on Sunday and rang in her big day by spending time with her family and taking in her brother-in-law Jay-Z's Saturday set. The sisters also stuck around for Sunday's line-up, where Jay made an appearance with Rihanna.
The "T.O.N.Y." singer Instagram'd a pic of her cute-as-usual outfit saying, "Blue and yellow and birthday love...Thank You!" Loves it.

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers
'I've listened to their music since I was a child,' says the R&B diva, who recorded 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love.'

<P>You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.</P><P>In early February, reports began circulating that <a href="/news/articles/1631297/mary-j-blige-records-led-zeppelins-stairway-heaven.jhtml">Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven,"</a> working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her <i>Stronger With Each Tear</i> album, due Monday.</P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float:left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:491065" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D491065" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering <i>another</i> Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the <i>Essence</i> Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.</P><P>"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."</P><P>Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.</P><P>"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

U2, Bon Jovi Cake Up On Forbes Highest-Paid Musicians List
Gaga comes in at #4 with $168 mil for the year, while Bieber is the youngest artist on the list.

<P><a href="http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eeel45ehmg/the-worlds-25-highest-paid-musicians#content" target="_blank"><i>Forbes</i></a> released their 2011 World's Highest-Paid Musicians List on Wednesday, and apparently it still pays to be a veteran rocker — and it pays handsomely. <a href="/news/articles/1655032/bon-jovi-ac-dc-u2-top-world-tours-2010.jhtml">U2 topped the list</a>, raking in more than $195 million after their two-year 360 Tour grossed around $700 million, leapfrogging the Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang Tour as the richest run of all time.</P><P>Bon Jovi can't be too upset at snagging the list's runner-up spot. The group caked up $125 million in the last year. In a recent interview with <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2011/05/17/celebrity-100-11-jon-bon-jovi-kanye-west-bieber-still-rocking.html%22" target="_blank"><i>Forbes</a>,</i> Jon Bon Jovi recalled the band's early, more humble and less lucrative days jamming in a New Jersey basement with vintage posters on the wall illuminated by candles. "I'm thinking maybe this is an issue, maybe I just don't like them," he said. "Until I realized that all the oxygen was sucked out of the room by the candles ... So I blew out the candles, cranked up the amplifiers and said, 'We're going to be a rock band. If you believe in what I'm telling you, we can be the Rolling Stones."</P><P>You'd think that Bon Jovi gave a similar speech to Lady Gaga with all the bank that she acquired this year. Coming behind Elton John ($204 million), who landed at #3, Gaga earned $168 million in the past year and would've made more had she been more frugal with the costs of her stage show — then again she's been known to spare little expense when it comes to pleasing her fans.</P><P>Paul McCartney, 68, was the oldest artist to make the list, clocking $66 mil, while 17-year-old Justin Bieber was the youngest to make the list with $53 million. Jay-Z and Beyoncé were the only couple to make the list. In fact, for the first time since being married, Hov earned more than his wife, taking home $37 million, while B earned $35 mil. All of the calculated earnings are based off pretax income earned from May 2010 to May 2011, before agents and managers take their cuts, according to <a href="http://blogs.forbes.com/zackomalleygreenburg/2011/06/15/the-worlds-highest-paid-musicians/" target="_blank">Forbes.com</a>.</p>

On Monday night, Queen B hit the red carpet at the splashy Costume Institute Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a dress that left very little to the imagination.</P><P>Her sheer, skintight Givenchy haute couture gown was highlighted with black sequins and beading, as well as purple and black feathers on the floor-length hemline. The dress showed off her fit, curvaceous post-baby body. The singer has added a fourth show to her Memorial Day weekend residency at the Revel entertainment center in the New Jersey shore town. From its pay-as-you-wish, set-the-industry-ablaze rush release to its scattershot sonics — all clicky drum tracks and doomy guitars and keening electronics — it was <i>exactly</i> the kind of thing you'd expect from arguably the best (and certainly the most mercurial) band on the planet. It was an event.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Radiohead's Dark, Cerebral 'The King Of Limbs' Comes Out A Day Early" id="vid:624447" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Their new album, <a href="/news/articles/1657899/radiohead-new-album.jhtml"><i>The King of Limbs</a>,</i> which was announced Monday and then showed up unexpectedly in fans' in-boxes on Friday (February 18) morning — one day ahead of schedule — is, by comparison, a decidedly <i>minor</i> effort. It was not preceded by a single <a href="/news/articles/1571936/whats-future-major-labels.jhtml">"Death of the Music Industry" think piece</a>, instead, it just sort of <i>came out early,</i> for reasons that, at the time of this writing, have yet to really be explained. (A press release states simply, "With everything ready on their Web site, the band decided to bring forward the release, rather than wait." Oh, OK then.) Even a planned stunt set to take place in Tokyo's Hachiko Square was scrapped at the last minute, due to security fears.</P><P>And perhaps all of that is fitting, especially when you consider that sonically, <i>Limbs</i> is assuredly the most <i>minor</i> thing Radiohead have ever done, a dour, insular, downright <i>atmospheric</i> thing that, from the skittering, jazzy fractals of opening track "Bloom" to the slowly decaying guitars and pitter-pat drums of closer "Separator," works very hard at creating a mood ... one that is part amniotic, part pastoral, yet all washed over in a gauzy, dreamlike haze. It is not an immediately gratifying listen, and it most certainly does not rock. Rather, it reveals itself to you gradually, in layers, at it's own deliberate pace.</P><P>Like the early parts of <i>Kid A,</i> <i>Limbs</i> makes a conscious decision to bury the guitar work of Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien deep in the mix, slowly building steam instead on a pastiche of wavy electronic pulses, the clicking drum work of Phil Selway and the ominous bass playing of Colin Greenwood (especially on "Morning Mr. Magpie" and the roiling, dank "Little by Little"). The thing is, those guitars never really show up — to the best of my knowledge, there's not a single solo on the whole album — or when they do, they're of the ringing acoustic type (the genuinely pretty "Give Up the Ghost"). Instead, large portions of the record are dedicated to crystalline, echoing tracks like "Feral" and "Lotus Flower," which, when coupled with Thom Yorke's still-lithe (though heavily coated) voice, create the effect of standing alone in a forest clearing at midnight as the fog begins to roll in.</P><P>And in a lot of ways, I suspect that's probably exactly what Radiohead were going for on <i>The King of Limbs,</i> which takes its name (in part at least) from the <a href="http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/articles/blogs/finding-radioheads-king-of-limbs" target="_blank">oldest tree in Europe</a>, a knotty, slightly terrifying thing deep in England's Savernake Forest. From the snippets of recorded birdsong that show up repeatedly (and provide the backbone to "Give Up the Ghost") to the mossy, wet atmospherics that drip off nearly every song, it is about as close as Radiohead will ever come to releasing genuine field recordings. There is a damp musk to the album, a foreboding sense of inevitability. Like being lost in a dense forest, the light slowly fading, the path becoming increasingly choked. It is a claustrophobia that previously only existed in nature, a kind that is becoming rarer and rarer as we humans carry our ugly sprawl to each corner of the globe. And that idea is just as terrifying as being stranded in a forest — if not more so. Which is why, though it's a minor album, <i>The King of Limbs</i> is still a major accomplishment — evoking emotions <i>that</i> powerful and primal isn't exactly easy to do.</p>

Evanescence's 'My Heart Is Broken' Video: The Haunting
Brand-new clip finds the band trapped within a nightmare of its own invention.

<P>After nearly a month spent touting its <a href="/news/articles/1675654/evanescence-my-heart-is-broken.jhtml">various ethereal qualities</a>, on Tuesday (January 24), <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/evanescence/artist.jhtml">Evanescence</a> premiered their video for "My Heart Is Broken," a dark, dreamlike thing that pushes Amy Lee's claustrophobic musings to the next level. And somewhere beyond that too.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="On The Set Of 'My Heart Is Broken' With Evanescence" id="vid:726271" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>As Lee told MTV News back in December, the look and feel of the "Broken" clip was very much influenced by the British fantasy/horror flick "Paperhouse," about a young girl who creates vivid dream worlds to escape the harsh reality of everyday life, only to eventually realize she's stuck in those dreams — inspiration that certainly resonates with the song's lyrics, which are very much about being trapped in a dark, desolate place and trying to free one's self despite mounting evidence to the contrary.</P><P>Working with director Dean Karr, and aided very much by fiber-optic technology, <a href="/news/articles/1677475/evanescence-my-heart-is-broken-video.jhtml">Evanescence have created a video</a> that is both haunting <i>and</i> haunted. It opens with Lee suspended in an inky void, a single light projecting from her finger. While her bandmates bash away in the blackness, she slowly begins to fill her emptiness by creating a dream world — a fallow field, a sea of stars, a crumbling room — until she eventually realizes that, in spite of her attempts, she is just as trapped as she was before.</P><P>At clip's end, the viewer is left to wonder whether she has the power to escape (though a cracked mirror seems to indicate she can), which, in a way, only further connects the video to the song itself: Like Lee sings, each of us have within ourselves the ability to free ourselves from any situation; whether we do or not is largely our decision. The first step seems to be realizing that the walls we surround ourselves with are largely of our own creation. The rest is up to us.</P><P><i>What do you think of the "My Heart Is Broken" video? Akon Passed On Signing Drake, Kardinal Offishall Says
'It's one of those things that worked out beautifully for Drake with YMCMB. He's got a good camp,' Kardi tells 'RapFix Live.'

Akon sure has an ear for top-notch talent; just ask T-Pain and Lady Gaga. Still, even the best music execs miss out from time to time, and on Wednesday's "RapFix Live," Kon's buddy Kardinal Offishall revealed the "Locked Up" singer's most notable miss.
"The biggest one that he passed on, I told him about Drake early," Kardi revealed. "I said, 'Kon, this kid is a T.V. star... and this kid is crazy.' "
Kardinal, like Drizzy, hails from Toronto, but was able to establish himself as a notable rap talent years before Drake broke out with 2009's So Far Gone."I had met him years before he started with his first mixtape," Offishall said. "The thing that's dope about Drake is that I remember, like he was just hungry because he wanted to make that transition from the acting to the rapping."
Kardi recalled a specific meeting where the OVO spitter played him an early mixtape, which he was instantly impressed with. The two even collaborated on "The Last Hope," a song off of Drake's 2007 mixtape Comeback Season. It would take a number of years, but by the time Drake officially arrived with So Far Gone, there was little doubt that he was going to be huge. "After he blew, I went back and said, 'See Kon, I told you,' " Kardinal said. "But it's one of those things that worked out beautifully for Drake with YMCMB. He's got a good camp."

Radiohead Brighten Coachella's Second Day
Career-spanning set features icons' newest tracks and older fan favorites.

<P><b>INDIO, California</b> — <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/radiohead/artist.jhtml">Radiohead</a> brought their huge sound and eye-candy backdrop to the Coachella festival's polo fields Saturday night in a fairly mellow set, heavy with cuts from their latest offering, <i>The King of Limbs</i>.</P><P>Amidst their newest tracks — including "Morning Mr Magpie," "Lotus Flower" and "Give Up the Ghost" — the British rock icons sprinkled tunes spanning much of their catalog, from <i>Kid A</i> rave-up "Idioteque" to <i>In Rainbows'</i> "Bodysnatchers" and "15 Step."</P><P>Of "Karma Police," their first classic selection of the night, singer Thom Yorke said, "You know those people who are only talking to you because they want something from you? You need to take a cold shower afterwards."</P><P>Radiohead, who last graced the polo fields in 2004, are also headlining <a href="/news/articles/1679241/bonnaroo-lineup-2012.jhtml">Bonnaroo</a> in June.</P><P>The fivesome answered calls for an encore with longtime fan favorite "Lucky," "Reckoner" and the alternately soaring and intense "Paranoid Android."</P><P>Coachella's second day also featured Bon Iver, David Guetta, the Shins and A$AP Rocky.</P><P>In response to last year's event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — the festival is experimenting with hosting the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22.</P><P>The Black Keys, Swedish House Mafia and Pulp rocked <a href="/news/articles/1683134/coachella-day-one-black-keys.jhtml">Friday's chilly opening day</a>. Today's (April 15) third and final day brings Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg (rumored to contain an appearance by the late <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/04/12/nate-dogg-perform-coachella-as-hologram">Nate Dogg as a hologram</a>), Florence and the Machine, Justice, Calvin Harris and the reunited At the Drive-In.</P><P><i>Did you go to Coachella?
